Richmond House Residents Rebuild Community Connections

Residents at Richmond House in Stalybridge are set to enjoy a renewed programme of social activities thanks to a £3,000 grant awarded by the Jigsaw Foundation.

Activities at the Over 55s scheme in Stalybridge including weekly coffee mornings, lunch clubs and an annual Christmas meal, came to an end when the regular organisers became ill.

As new residents moved into the scheme, there was a growing desire to revive community life and create more opportunities for people to get involved.

With a focus on reducing loneliness, improving wellbeing and encouraging greater participation, the group successfully applied to the Jigsaw Foundation for additional support.

The funding will be used for a karaoke machine for community events, activities linked to major events, a Christmas celebration and a summer trip, all helping the group with new opportunities for social interaction, strengthening friendships and staying active.

Linda Whyatt, Jigsaw’s Engagement, Funding and Research Officer, attended the group’s first breakfast club funded through the Jigsaw Foundation in August which was attended by 15 residents.

She said: “It was an excellent turnout and it showed the appetite within the scheme for activities that bring people together. The event provided an opportunity for residents to socialise, make new connections, and begin rebuilding the vibrant community spirit that Richmond House has enjoyed in the past.”
